6.2. Crisis of Genres and Aesthetic Shifts

Literature reflects these underground transformations of sensitivities by recycling existing genres, such as the sentimental novel; but also, by giving rise to unusual literary forms, at the crossroads of observation and fiction, with Mercier and Restif. Last but not least, it gave rise to new “sublime” motifs, promised to be highly successful as early as the 1770s: ruins and tombs. Check out the following videos to learn more about all this.
