6.1. Legacies and Betrayals of the Enlightenment

The turning point for the Enlightenment witnessed the continuation of the philosophers’ questionings and work. On the heirs’ side, first Condorcet, then the Ideologues, who intend to put the progress of knowledge at the service of human happiness all the way up to political action; and Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, who celebrates a lost nature in Paul and Virginie. Sade, on the other hand, gives a stinging denial to the theses of his predecessors, showing a nature indifferent to good and a useless virtue. This is what Laurence Vanoflen and Colas Duflo suggest you discover in the following videos.
