2.2. The Epistolary Novel
After the memoir novel, the other major novel format that dominates the eighteenth century is the epistolary novel, or letter novel.
In the next three videos, we will discover, with Stéphane Pujol and Alain Sandrier, the specific characteristics of this genre and its astonishing success. We will focus in particular on Rousseau’s La Nouvelle Héloïse, which has aroused incredible enthusiasm, and on the most famous of the letter novels, Les Liaisons dangereuses, of Choderlos de Laclos.
